Back in the ’70s, breakfast was a tasteless, compulsory business – a way for parents to get their children to eat the requisite nutrients for a day at school. Suffice to say, those days are long gone – breakfast has become a decidedly sexy affair, with couples, families and groups of friends heading to one of the Mother City’s chic eateries to break bread on weekend mornings. We’ve rounded up some of the best breakfast spots in Cape Town where you can enjoy the first meal of the day:
Owner Jacques Erasmus’ passion for travel is evident in the ever-changing thoroughly modern and whimsical decor of this oasis in the CBD. His highly creative seasonal menu is bursting with options, one more delicious than the next.
We love The home-made potato r?sti with salmon gravadlax and soft poached egg is so comforting, while the French toast with Pecorino, home-made prickly-pear syrup and bacon is a delicious twist on a classic. The freshly squeezed juices, such as the blend of apple, celery, and ginger or the apple, beetroot, and orange are sure to whet your appetite.
2- Lola’s Café on Long
Arty and quirky, much-loved Lola’s does gourmet delicacies for breakfast, lunch and dinner (in summer) in a relaxed and unpretentious environment. Breakfast in the buzz of Long Street is a special, energising treat.
We love the French-toast croissant with banana, vanilla syrup and bacon: the perfect, indulgent salty-and-sweet start to the day/week/weekend. (It comes highly recommended after a night out.)
Fresh, seasonal and sustainably sourced produce that’s lovingly prepared and beautifully presented is what you can expect from this quaint and always busy “café and pantry”. Everything on the innovative menu looks delicious – ask the friendly staff to help you decide.
We love the low-carb version of Eggs Benedict, where a delicious mushroom and aubergine r?sti with truffle oil replaces the toast.
4- Jason Bakery
This corner bakery on Bree Street is the go-to spot for hipsters and innercity office workers for artisanal bread, buttery croissants, out-of-this world pies and zingy sandwiches.
We love everything! But you must have a croissant filled with fluffy scrambled eggs, rocket and bacon.
Don’t let the name discourage you; this smart city spot serves breakfast and lunch and Lavazza coffee all day. We love the French butter croissant deluxe with creamy free-range scrambled eggs, smoked salmon, cream cheese and herbs – rich and delicious. Or would we choose the iced coffee with vanilla whipped cream and a simple, freshly baked panino? Or the Fragrant Porridge Bowl: slow-cooked oats, cinnamon, sultanas, poppy seeds and cream drizzle. Hmmmm…
