Because
of the intricately detailed structure of the trailer, production
storyboards were drawn up and edited into an 'animatic' - industry
terminology for an animated set of previsualization or storyboard
images designed to allow the director to determine the timing
and flow of the edit prior to shooting one second of footage.
This results in the production knowing exactly what and how each
shot must be done, and saves on lost production time and general
lack of vision onset. On the downside, however, complete reliance
on the storyboards can be cause for an uninspired piece, since
it locks the filmmakers to a template and disallows for 'onset
karma'.
For this particular project, Alan chose
to follow the boarded animatics closely, because of production
and time constraints. The result is an almost shot for shot version
of the finished piece against the storyboards.
